BECOME EUROPE’S FIRST SPECIALIST JAZZ AND CONTEMPORARY CONSERVATORY TO BE DESIGNATED AN ALL-STEINWAY SCHOOL
As part of a £2m refurbishment of the college’s facilities, through a combination of purchase, a generous donation and a Steinway & Sons lease plan, Leeds Conservatoire receive a delivery of 56 new pianos, in order to become the first conservatory in England with the designation, an “All-Steinway School”.
Principal Professor Philip Meaden and Director of Curriculum and Research, Dr Randall Whittaker, were joined on their trip to the Steinway & Sons Hamburg factory by Dame Fanny Waterman, founder of Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, Steinway & Sons artist Wolfgang Manz and Trevor Green, director of the Australian Academy of Music and Head of Music at BBC North, to select a fleet of new pianos. Delivery of the 56 new Steinway, Boston and Essex pianos was featured on BBC breakfast, lunch and evening news, as well as ITV local news and across the local press.
However, the highlight of the day was a rare performance of a piece called “In C” featuring 40 of the new pianos, played by both staff and students.
